Reading Standards

7th December 2017

Witham MP Priti Patel has welcomed news that English pupils have improved their results in international reading exams, rising to joint 8th of the 50 countries which took part, ahead of almost all other European countries. Priti has campaigned to raise literacy standards and set up the nationally recognised Get Witham Reading scheme to support reading for learning and enjoyment in local schools. The most recent reading day she organised earlier this year was the largest yet. Priti said:

“The raising of literacy standards helps young people to fulfil their potential so that they can make the most of opportunities in the future. Reading is an incredibly important skill for young people to have for any career path that they take and I am pleased that initiatives like my Get Witham Reading scheme encourage reading for learning and enjoyment.”

“The young children who took part in these tests started education in 2010, and so these results are a clear endorsement of the reforms the Conservatives have made to education. Under the last Labour Government standards fell behind our international competitors limiting the life chances of so many young people. We have seen a huge improvement in recent year and I am pleased that this surge has been driven by improvements to the reading of lower performing pupils. This means that the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers has narrowed significantly and the life chances of the next generation are being improved.”
