Proposed Garden Settlements

24th July 2017

Witham MP Priti Patel has warned Colchester Borough Council and Braintree District Council at a public meeting that they are failing to make the case for proposed garden settlements. The proposals, which could lead to more than 20,000 new homes being built on the Braintree District and Colchester Borough border, have caused considerable public interest and a high level of responses to current consultation. The garden settlement proposals form part of both councils Local Plans currently being consulted on and Priti has received representations from constituents concerned about the scale of developments, infrastructure and public service provision. Priti said:

“While residents have an open mind about future housing growth, there are serious concerns about the way the councils are engaging with the public. Many residents feel that the outcome of the consultation is a foregone conclusion and remain unconvinced by the plans. It was concerning to hear that so many members of the public were unaware that the councils had set up a company to progress these plans.

“No credible plans have come forward from the councils to improve infrastructure in the area to meet existing and future demand and people are worried about the provision of schools and healthcare facilities for such a large population increase. We need new housing, infrastructure and public services but the councils have not won over the public on these plans.”
