Local MP Priti Patel has slammed the decision made by Braintree District Council's Planning Committee to grant planning permission for 140 dwellings on the Stonepath Meadow site in Hatfield Peverel. Permission was granted despite an application for 80 dwellings being previously refused and the site being ruled out of the emerging Local Plan and Neighbourhood Development Plan for housing. An alternative brownfield site is also available for development. Priti said:
"This decision is appalling and outrageous. Stonepath Meadow is a wonderful space and it is shocking that it will now be destroyed by this huge and unwelcome development. Local people in Hatfield Peverel have been proactive in putting forward other sites for development in the village and it is shameful that local views have been ignored."
"An alternative brownfield site is available for housing development which has more local support and is part of the village's Neighbourhood Plan. Residents have been let down as their views and the hard work they have put into finding other development sites in the village have run roughshod over."
Priti also praised local residents for their campaign against the development. She added:
"Local residents in Hatfield Peverel have come together to oppose this application. They have shown leadership by developing a Neighbourhood Plan for the village which has now been undermined. They have shown great determination and commitment to fight to defend this piece of the countryside and I commend them for everything they have done."
