Mid Essex NHS Trust at risk from costly PFI

Local MP Priti Patel has voiced her concerns after it was disclosed that Mid Essex Hospitals NHS Trust was one of 22 NHS Trusts who had reported concerns over the viability of the costs associated with PFI (Private Finance Initiative) schemes introduced by the previous Government. Annual costs of PFI set to rise by 75% over the next 18 years with PFI costing taxpayers £70 billion on building projects with a value of £11.4 billion. Priti Patel said:

“It is outrageous that our local hospital is tied down to paying these excessive costs while there is an unacceptable shortage of healthcare provision elsewhere in Essex, including in Witham.”

“This is yet another appalling example of the feckless way the previous Government wasted hard-pressed taxpayers’ money, along with the £12 billion blown on the failed NHS IT project which could have pad for 60,000 new nurses.”

“These examples of waste demonstrate why it is so important that the current Government’s NHS reforms can go through to ensure the additional money being put into NHS budgets is spent effectively on the frontline. My constituents should not have to suffer because of the maladministration of public funds seen under Labour.”
