Mental Health

13th October 2017

Last year local MP, Priti Patel, supported a joint bid by local Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs), NHS Trusts and Essex County Council to develop specialist perinatal mental health community services and increase the availability of high-quality care for infants and parents.

The bid was successful and awarded £2.7 million to expand and develop existing services across the whole of Essex. Prior to this announcement, there was no access to these services, which falls well below recommended national guidelines.

The services will focus on mothers of all ages with mental illnesses following their birthing experience, and will also support mothers and fathers who have lost a child during pregnancy.

Priti commented:

“I welcome the launch of this new, community mental health service in Essex which will be crucial to support mothers, fathers and their infants. Mental illness too often starts in childhood and when left untreated, can blight lives, and become entrenched.

The Government is clear that we want to transform the way we deal with mental illness in this country at every stage of a person’s life, and in our communities.

This starts with ensuring infants, mothers and fathers get the vital help and support they need and deserve to ensure every child in Essex has the very best start in life.
