Get Witham Reading 2015

Local MP Priti Patel has visited two primary schools where reading days have taken place as part of her Get Witham Reading initiative, which Priti set up to promote reading and to raise literacy standards in local schools. Powers Hall Academy in Witham held a Titanic-themed reading day complete with a model of the famous ship and fancy-dress while the theme at Woodham Walter Primary School was Jack and the Beanstalk. The Get Witham Reading initiative has been endorsed by the Prime Minister and Education Secretary, who have both written in support of the day’s reading events. Priti said:

“Both schools have put on fantastic events today to show how reading can be fun and exciting. It was great to see so many young people involved and enjoying the reading related activities taking place. I congratulate the schools, teachers, parents and pupils for making today such a great success.”

“The Get Witham Reading initiative was set up to help encourage more young people in my constituency to read more books at home and in school. We live in an era where books have to compete against television, computer games and the internet. But I want to ensure that children in my constituency enjoy reading at home and in schools as books can open up a new opportunities and unlock their creativity and imagination.”
