Fire Safety

1st August 2017

Witham MP Priti Patel has discussed fire safety and the new governance arrangements for Essex Fire and Rescue Service with Acting Chief Fire Officer Adam Eckley during a visit to their headquarters in Kelvedon. Priti’s visit follows this week’s announcement that Essex’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Roger Hirst, will be the first in the country to oversee fire services too. Priti said:

“The tragic events at Grenfell Tower last month have highlighted the importance of a coordinated approach to improving fire safety. I was pleased to discuss with the Chief Fire Officer the actions being taken in Essex to support fire safety and to raise awareness of the actions the public can take to reduce fire risks.”

“The new governance arrangements with the Police and Crime Commissioner being the first in the country providing democratic oversight of the fire service announced this week present us with a new opportunity to improve collaboration between these emergency services. Roger Hirst, the Chief Fire Officer and the Chief Constable have a clear vision on how they can deliver high quality services, crime and fire prevention advice and community safety hubs which will benefit the public and support frontline investment.”
