Employment figures

15th February 2017

Witham MP Priti Patel has welcomed the data released today showing that the employment rate in the UK is now at a record high. There are now 74.6% of the working aged population in employment with the employment rate for women also reaching record 70%. Across the UK there are now 300,000 more people in work than a year ago, with most of that increase – some 218,000 – in full time employment. In the Witham constituency the Claimant Count has also fallen over the year and the number of claimants aged 18 to 24 has dropped by 17% from 120 to 100, which is 80% lower than the peak seen under the last Labour Government. Priti said:

“With more people in work and more young people finding employment, our economy is in a strong position. The Conservative Government has supported job creating businesses and our reforms to welfare are getting people off of benefits and into work. Over the last year more families in Witham have the security of a regular pay packet and that is down to the Government’s reforms and the commitment of local job creating businesses.”
